Grow Your Own Crystal Kit - Instructions

Please take note of all safety rules when handling chemicals and whilst performing this experiment

Safety Glasses are recommended for supervising adult and child, but are not included.

1. Remove the base rock(s) out of the box, cut free from packaging using scissors, and wash in warm water and dry on kitchen towel. The plastic box may now be used as a tank in which to grow your crystals.

2. Fill the tank with luke warm water, up to ¾ of the depth of the tank.

3. Carefully cut the corner of the crystal powder sachet using scissors, add this to the tank and stir using a clean plastic spoon, until dissolved. Once dissolved gently place the base rock(s) into the bottom of the tank.

4. Place the tank in a warm place, (i.e. an airing cupboard), or any other suitable place out of reach of small children. A constant temperature is preferred to allow the water to evaporate, and the crystals to start growing. Then do not disturb! (NOTE: Do not put box lid back on to box.) Wash hands and stirrer when finished!

5. Crystals will begin to grow on the rock within a few days, but be patient and do not disturb this experiment. (Over-handling will cause crystals to fall out of solution to the
bottom and not form on the rock properly. If this should happen, add a bit of warm water and redissolve crystals into liquid.)

6. When your crystals have grown large enough, or when all the liquid has evaporated, gently remove the crystal-covered rock from tank and leave to air dry out of reach of children. Dispose of any unwanted material/liquid by flushing down a sink.

7. Wash out box with warm water and dry. When the crystal-covered rock is dry, use the box with lid as a display case for your grown crystal(s). Now place in a safe place to view and study. Wipe clean the surrounding work surfaces you have used and wash your hands.

ADVICE FOR SUPERVISING ADULTS :

Please read the following instructions, safety rules and first aid information provided in case of accidents.

1. Safety Glasses not included but are recommended.

2. This set is only for use by children over 10 years old and with adult supervision.

3. The incorrect use of chemicals can cause injury and damage to health.
Only carry out the procedure described.

4. The supervising adult should satisfy themselves that this kit is suitable and safe for the child's abilities before proceeding.

5. The supervising adult should discuss the warnings and safety information with the child or children before commencing.

SAFETY RULES :

(1) Do read the instructions before use. Follow them and keep them in a safe place for reference.

(2) Do not allow chemicals to come into contact with eyes or any other part of the body, always use plenty of fresh water to wash away.

(3) Do not allow chemicals to come into contact with mouth or be swallowed
(SEE FIRST AID PROCEDURES BELOW).

(4) Do keep small children & animals away from experimental area when using this kit.

(5) Do wash your hands and surrounding area after carrying out this experiment.

(6) Do not eat, drink or smoke in the experimental area.

(7) Do not use equipment that has not been supplied with this kit unless advised.

(8) Do keep surrounding area used clear of obstructions, well lit and ventilated, and close to a water supply.

(9) Do store this set in a safe place out of reach of small children during the use of this kit and also when not in use.

FIRST AID : In case of Chemical Accidents - note the following procedures :

In case of SKIN contact - Wash affected area.
In case of EYE contact - Wash out eye with plenty of water, holding eye open if necessary.
If SWALLOWED - Wash out mouth with water and drink plenty of fresh water, DO NOT induce vomiting - Seek immediate medical advice.
In case of BURNS - Wash affected area with plenty of water for 5 minutes and seek immediate medical advice.
In case of INHALATION - Remove person to fresh air.
In case of INJURY or DOUBT, always seek medical advice.
